The Website

The intention is for this website to be a vehicle for a number of diverse essays aimed at establishing pragmatic and realistic links between the ancient myths and legends that have come down to us–predominantly via ancient Greece–from the late prehistoric to early historic world as it is being revealed through the work of modern scholars and researchers.

Because the detail of the subject is so complex and convoluted, I’ve decided to present my 20 years of research in a series of essays, each on particular aspects of the story. These will all be linked to the original story as translated by Benjamin Jowett in the 19th century ce (because it’s free), with some references to Desmond Lee’s translation published by Penguin Classics in 1965 where there are some differences in interpretation of the ancient text.

In the ‘CONTENTS’ section, the page titled ‘Overview’ will form the introduction to the hypothesis, and the page, ‘What Plato Actually Wrote’ is based on the Benjamin Jowett translation of the text and is presented in blue italic type. The text will be divided into sections according to the subject and interspersed with my comments presented in standard black type. References will not be cited here but will be carried in the bibliographies of the pertinent discussion papers which are linked to the content of this manuscript. It’s intended that over time and in the not-too-distant future, these essays and discussion papers will be added to the website as they are written.

The title ‘What Plato Actually Wrote’ has been chosen as an acknowledgement that the story has been distorted and corrupted by all kinds of weird imaginings, particularly since the nineteenth century. This process began with Ignatius Donnelly’s book ‘Atlantis the Antediluvian World followed closely by Helena Blavatsky’s ‘Isis Unveiled and ‘The Secret Doctrine, and Edgar Cayce with his readings on Atlantis which were made public between about 1924 and 1945. Since these heady times there have been innumerable publications by uncritical would-be ‘Atlantologists’ and some serious scholars who only concentrated on a few aspects of the story resulting in some rather fundamental errors. This aspect of the argument is presented under the heading ‘Modern Fantasies’. For there to be any credible resolution of the Atlantis debate, all, or at least most aspects of the story need to be convincingly dealt with, and so far this has not satisfactorily been achieved.

All discussion papers presented on this website will be made freely available in PDF form.

In 2011, I presented a paper at the 3rd Atlantis Hypothesis, International Conference in Greece titled Plato’s war at the end of the Middle Bronze Age: Part I: Time-frame and evidence. I was invited to write a second paper for the Book of Proceedings which I titled Part II: The Acropolis, what can it tell us? Unfortunately these have still not been published due to fall-out from the Greek government debt crisis; but they will be freely available as downloadable PDFs.

In 2009 I wrote The Unlost Island: A History of Misunderstanding Atlantis, published by Zeus Publications and is now out of print but an Ebook version can be freely downloaded from this site. Admittedly the book tends to be fairly dense in detail and several aspects of it are in need of correction and refinement; and this is largely the purpose of this website. All I ask is that credit is given where credit is due.

I don’t want this website to become a blog spot that requires constant attention, but I do welcome any earnest comments and constructive criticisms. This is best done by Email via the “CONTACT” page.
